Jessica Morden, the MP for Newport East, has expressed approval of Andy Burnham’s efforts to assist households struggling with living expenses by tackling exploitative pricing practices and problematic recurring payment schemes.

The Prime Minister has revealed plans to introduce a series of practical measures designed to ease financial pressures, beginning with two specific initiatives.

Under the Prime Minister’s proposals, retailers will be prohibited from making deceptive claims about price reductions. Consumers have increasingly raised concerns about shops hiking prices artificially to create an illusion of value, such as raising costs only to immediately advertise special offers that make savings appear more substantial than they actually are.

The Prime Minister also intends to address the issue of subscription traps, where customers struggle to terminate their arrangements and find contracts renewed automatically at increased rates.

With consumers set to benefit from typical monthly savings of £14 on unnecessary subscriptions, the reforms will require companies to supply more transparent initial details, periodic notifications, and significantly simpler ways to end agreements.

Mrs Morden commented that this represents merely one of several practical improvements the Labour administration intends to implement, noting that today marks merely the beginning of these efforts.

She added that the government aims to increase disposable income for citizens and restore confidence that political decisions can positively affect ordinary people’s daily circumstances.

The Prime Minister stated that he recognises widespread frustration with overpriced promotions and membership schemes that prove difficult to exit. He noted that Westminster has grown accustomed to dismissing such everyday frustrations as inevitable facts of modern life, but expressed disagreement with this perspective, particularly given the ongoing strain that living costs continue to place on numerous households.

Sir Mel Stride, the Shadow Chancellor, responded that Andy Burnham has already exhausted his policy options. He pointed out that financial pressures did not emerge recently, raising questions about why it has taken Labour considerable time to implement legislation originally passed during the previous administration. He argued that Labour’s tax increases have driven up expenses for working families and resulted in employment losses, and that consultations and recycled proposals cannot compensate for these impacts.
