The proprietors of the Cwmbran Centre have sought planning consent to alter the permitted use of a vacant retail unit.

L&C Investments is requesting authorisation to modify the planning classification of unit 19 in The Mall from A1, which permits commercial retail activity, to a combined A1 and A3 classification allowing either retail operations or food and beverage service.

In documentation provided to Torfaen Borough Council, the application states that no construction or operational development is involved, with only the change of use being sought. The submission notes that the development is minimal in scale as no physical modifications to the premises are planned.

The application also indicates that both commercial retail and food and drink operations are deemed appropriate for the location under existing planning guidelines, including the policy designating the town centre as the primary location for new retail establishments and complementary town centre uses.

The proposal further notes that the potential introduction of food and drink establishments would not compromise the commercial vitality of the town centre’s retail sector. The majority of businesses in the vicinity, including the Post Office, TJ Jones, River Island, and the footwear retailer AG Meek, would continue operating as retail outlets.

The proposal is currently under review by planning officials, with residents able to submit feedback until Wednesday, August 26.
