Rural fires have caused serious worry throughout this season, both in Torfaen and further afield. I want to express enormous gratitude to the emergency services, agricultural workers and crews from the area and surrounding regions who have been battling these blazes.
For residents, please exercise heightened caution during these warm, arid conditions when venturing into the countryside. Steer clear of lighting barbecues on unprotected grassland and ensure you remove all refuse, as it is astonishing how rapidly a fire can ignite and escalate.
This Saturday (August 15) marks our Pontypool transformation event in the town centre.
Municipal crews are carrying out tidying, upkeep and environmental enhancements along Crane Street, The Link, Commercial Street and George Street based on recommendations from local people. The efforts will peak during the community involvement day, when local enterprises, volunteers and inhabitants collaborate.
Youngsters are also participating by collaborating with artists to design artwork on the fencing being erected surrounding St James Church whilst renovation work takes place.
Additional schemes include enhancements to bus stops and cleaning operations, alongside a collection of street art installations throughout the borough.
Sincere thanks to the Pontypool Community Taskforce for their direction and dedication. For me, this exemplifies The Torfaen Deal in practice – all stakeholders collaborating for our community. Those wishing to join the involvement day should attend the indoor market from 9am on Saturday, August 15.
Over 400 households participated in the week of festivities this month to commemorate Flying Start’s 20th anniversary in Torfaen.
The events took place at the Integrated Children’s Centre adjacent to Nant Celyn Primary School. Numerous services operate from this facility to aid local families. In Torfaen, the Flying Start Programme has additionally allocated funding for improved health visitor and parenting assistance and support with speech, language and communication development.
An extensive schedule of complimentary activities was available including handicrafts, sensory play, a teddy bears’ gathering, animal encounters, storytelling, games and sporting pursuits. During my visit, I handled a snake and conversed with parents, children, employees and helpers.
The activities aligned with the objective of preparing youngsters for school, emphasising play, self-assurance and early education. While children participated in the activities, visitors had the opportunity to speak with the Torfaen Family Information Service, Health Visitors and childcare providers operating from the same location.
Heartfelt thanks to all who have contributed to Flying Start in Torfaen over the years. Collectively, you have transformed the lives of children and families in Torfaen. I recall when Flying Start was initially launched by the Labour administration, aiming to boost opportunities for nursery-aged children from economically disadvantaged areas. Our Early Years teams have genuinely embraced that ethos, building upon those initial principles to support local children and families.
Finally, my August column would be incomplete without acknowledging the excellent Torfaen Play Service. Their facilities throughout Torfaen provide thousands of children with opportunities to socialise and enjoy the summer months, ranging from unrestricted playschemes to Food and Fun Camps. Their welcoming approach ensures youngsters with extra requirements can participate, whilst parents and carers also benefit from relief. Thank you to the employees and volunteers for everything you do to make children’s summer memorable.
