The owner of a Newport wildlife rescue centre has expressed deep frustration and indicated she intends to pursue legal remedies after unidentified internet users prompted regulatory officials to inspect her residence, agricultural land and retail premises.
Grove Farm, spanning 26 acres adjacent to the M4 motorway, has previously received coverage from the Argus highlighting its efforts to rescue and rehabilitate mistreated creatures, with proposals for therapeutic and educational initiatives aimed at helping both humans and animals.
Shortly following that media attention, a Facebook page featuring anonymous contributors began circulating allegations that animals at the facility were being subjected to cruelty or involved in unlawful commerce.
No supporting documentation accompanied these accusations, and the sanctuary has consistently refuted them.
Last week, Newport trading standards personnel, accompanied by law enforcement officers and representatives from the RSPCA, carried out a warrant at two locations within the city as part of enquiries into suspected canine breeding activities and associated violations.
A Newport City Council representative stated that further remarks would be unsuitable while inquiries remain active, without confirming any detentions.
Gwent Police clarified to the Argus that they had no involvement in the matter.
In footage uploaded to the internet, Grove Farm proprietor Holly James Gillum explained that regulatory officials attended her property because of accusations levelled by anonymous individuals, and that she permitted them entry to both her dwelling and the agricultural site.
She advised them regarding which structures fell under her control, responding by pointing out Pathology and the farm. She noted that her farm was accessible, and she confirmed by stating yes, here it is, examine whatever necessary.
Ms Gillum reported that RSPCA inspectors had already assessed the sanctuary, dismissing the social media accusations as ridiculous.
She disputed characterisations that her retail outlet had been ransacked, asserting that had officials actually ransacked it, they would have needed to break down the door since everything was secured, obviously. They requested the keys from her, and she provided them, instructing them to proceed to Pathology and inspect as required.
She additionally disclosed that trading standards personnel enquired whether she was experiencing difficulties, particularly concerning felines being abandoned at her location.
According to her account, she consented to officials removing nine young cats from the premises to alleviate the burden, contending that if official agencies possessed greater resources she would not be left managing such numerous abandoned animals single-handedly.
Regarding speculation that she had been taken into custody, Ms Gillum maintained this was entirely unfounded, declaring that this had nothing whatsoever to do with the police. The authorities could not take any action against her regarding anything. This entire matter stemmed from Trading Standards because individuals had alleged that she was engaged in money laundering, that she was a swindler, and that she mistreated animals, which was entirely absurd.
She reported that officials discovered her home to be completely immaculate and acknowledged that social services had also conducted visits.
Ms Gillum advised that she has since participated in a voluntary interview with trading standards officials, supplied documentation, and is cooperating with their enquiries, yet cautioned that she intends to take action against the operators of the anonymous page.
She asserts that an image exists depicting trading standards personnel entering the premises, which she subsequently forwarded to the hostile page.
She commented that when she said frustrated, she meant genuinely frustrated, noting that she has consulted a solicitor regarding possible charges relating to harassment, stalking, libel, character defamation and lost income, as well as the effects on her psychological wellbeing and family circumstances.
She explained that the persistent campaign had necessitated her taking time away from employment to attend interviews and had resulted in social services attending to her children.
In a subsequent communication, Ms Gillum informed supporters that she intends to reduce her participation in certain online disputes and concentrate increasingly on the commercial aspects of Grove Farm, while maintaining animal care duties and progressing toward her initial aspiration of a sanctuary serving both creatures and individuals.
Trading standards officials have indicated that they cannot provide additional commentary whilst their investigation into suspected canine breeding and related offences remains active.
No detentions have been verified in connection with the Grove Farm visits, and Ms Gillum maintains that no evidence has emerged to support the cruelty and illegal commerce allegations circulated via social media.
