UK police forces are rolling out innovative technology to combat the unlawful operation of e-scooters, e-bikes and motorcycles.
Officers will be equipped with portable spray devices capable of releasing a traceable forensic substance from distances reaching 10 metres.
The formulation is engineered to connect a perpetrator directly to a specific incident location, assisting authorities in building cases.
The system will be deployed by Hampshire constabulary, while North Wales officers announced last September their intention to intensify efforts against anti-social conduct, with particular emphasis on the unauthorised use of e-scooters and bicycles.
Thames Valley police intend to adopt the tool as well, according to a BBC report from April.
How does the forensic spray operate?
The Smart Tag mechanism connects people and transport to particular events via a distinctive, traceable identifier linked to the pressurised container from which it is discharged.
The substance remains invisible under normal lighting conditions and imparts a vivid yellow stain on garments and cycles, enabling officers to associate a suspect and their mode of transport with the location of an offence.
North Wales Police Sergeant Iwan Hughes observed last year that conventional methods of detention prove impractical in these scenarios. He noted the necessity for an approach permitting safe and effective intervention without heightening danger. He described the Smart Tag forensic spray as a promising solution. When applied, it covers the individual in a traceable liquid imperceptible without specialised detection but visible under ultraviolet illumination. A forensic identifier can subsequently be connected directly to the incident, offering solid evidentiary grounds for subsequent proceedings. He stated this methodology would be swiftly implemented by officers throughout the area.
A representative for Hampshire police commented that SmartTag equips officers with another tactical choice when managing situations where vehicles are employed in criminal activity or in ways that threaten public safety.
The technology enables personnel to apply the spray from distances of up to 10 metres, diminishing reliance on vehicle pursuits that can endanger the public alongside officers and offenders alike.
