A sudden dip in the Southern Distributor Road has left a motorist warning others to take care.
The uneven surface is on Newport’s Southern Distributor Road (SDR) near the Maesglas East roundabout and the city’s rubbish tip.
One driver posted a video to Facebook describing how their car “jerked badly” when passing over the dip and urged others to drive carefully.
Their warning led to questions about whether the defect had been reported and what action would be taken.

Newport City Council has since inspected the site and put up warning signs to alert drivers.
A spokesperson for the council said: “Newport City Council and the SDR management team are aware of the issue in question regarding the carriageway condition at the approach to Maesglas East roundabout.
“The location has been inspected and, as a precaution, warning signs have already been installed to alert motorists to the uneven surface.
“The condition of the carriageway is being monitored, and the appropriate remedial action is programmed for implementation as part of the planned maintenance programme in 2026.
“Motorists are advised to continue to follow the warning signs and exercise appropriate caution when driving in this area.”

The SDR is a key transport route, linking different parts of Newport and connecting the city to surrounding communities.
While permanent repairs are not scheduled until 2026, the dip will continue to be monitored and managed in the meantime.
The issue comes as Newport City Council is launching the next phase of its £18 million Fixing Our Roads scheme.
This programme will see resurfacing and surface treatment carried out on both major and residential routes across the city from late July through early August.

The dip near Maesglas East roundabout is not currently included in these immediate works, but the council confirmed it will form part of longer-term maintenance plans.
Drivers are asked to stay alert and reduce speed when travelling through the affected area.
