In March 2026, firefighting teams attended an earlier conflagration at the same former Nancy’s Café structure on Nelson Road.
Units from Caerphilly, Roath, Aberbargoed and Treharris conducted what South Wales Fire and Rescue Service characterised at the time as a defensive external attack, deploying four 45-metre hoses, breathing equipment and an elevated platform, and carrying out an internal sweep of the building.
That blaze was completely brought under control by 5.47pm and the matter was transferred to Gwent Police, who subsequently verified the fire had been lit deliberately and opened an inquiry, requesting information from anyone who may have observed unusual behaviour in the vicinity.
