Llanwern Community Council has given the green light to spend as much as £500 on wildlife signage alerting people to geese in the neighbourhood.

This decision came at the council gathering on June 29, which took place at Llanwern Village Hall.

Those present were Councillors M George in the chair, Brown, and Davies, along with clerk Mandy George.

Apologies were offered by Councillors Clemo, Collingbourne, Grant, and Jones.

The council approved the funding following an approach from Ward Councillor Kellaway.

The signage will be installed solely on adopted highways.

Among other topics debated were various planning issues, including the flood risk management initiative for Station Road.

The chair will maintain contact with Ward Councillor Kellaway to obtain progress reports.

The flooding problems at the intersection of Station Road and Bishton Road remain outstanding.

The chair will draw this to the attention of Redrow and Newport City Council.

The council also considered several reserved matters applications relating to housing schemes at the Llanwern Village Development Site and the Glan Llyn Development Site.

A number of determinations on these applications are still pending.

The council examined the bank reconciliation as at June 29, 2026, together with invoices for settlement, encompassing payments to YuEnergy, TalkTalk, Microsoft, Welsh Water, and J Wootton for internal audit work.

The village hall car park scheme was another item on the agenda.

The chair confirmed that the S73 application continues as fresh drawings were required.

The outcome of the revised application is expected shortly.

Funds have been earmarked by the council to fund this scheme.

Improvements to the village hall roof have commenced, with the council allocating a contribution of £10,000 together with a £2,000 contingency.

The playing field was also examined, with the chair to seek a quotation from a local tradesperson for mending the field gate, which has been flagged as an urgent health and safety concern.

The matter of dog fouling will be kept under observation.

The subsequent gathering is scheduled for July 27, 2026, at 7pm.
