Police have chosen not to release CCTV footage as part of the investigation into the death of Ann Widdecombe.

Officers are continuing to investigate after the 78-year-old former MP was found dead at her home on Haytor, Dartmoor, on Thursday (July 9).

Police believe she was attacked in her home at around 12.30pm the previous day.

A 26-year-old white British man was arrested at an address in Newton Abbot on suspicion of murder on Friday but was released from custody on Saturday (July 11).

Police will not be releasing Ann Widdecombe CCTV footage

Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman of Devon and Cornwall Police said: “We have been working at pace on this investigation.

“Officers are making progress and are pursuing a number of lines of enquiry.

“At this time, we have made the active decision not to release further information, including descriptions of any potential suspects or releasing CCTV footage.

“Releasing such information prematurely could compromise ongoing enquiries and may prejudice future investigative opportunities.

“The decision not to disclose further details at this time is made on an operational basis.

“We will release information to the public when it is appropriate and necessary, in order to support the investigation.”

Police have said the case is “not being treated as terrorism”, and there is currently “no information” to suggest the killing was politically motivated.

Ms Widdecombe began her career as a Conservative MP in Kent in 1987.

She later served as an MEP for the Brexit Party and was a spokeswoman for Reform UK.
