Furious locals demand action over eyesore car blighting street

Locals have expressed deep frustration after a burned-out vehicle that was reported to both police and the council remained in their village for several days, even though Gwent Police records indicated the matter had been referred to the council for removal.

The car, which residents say has remained in the same position since being abandoned, has become an ongoing source of annoyance for neighbours.

Anthony Bonnici, who lives locally, stated that he had alerted Monmouthshire County Council on five different occasions, as well as informing Gwent Police and Natural Resources Wales, yet as of July 7 the vehicle had not been moved.

He stated that on July 7 the car remained in position despite all reports made, and that the extended period it had remained there was deeply frustrating. He added that beyond being an unpleasant sight in the community, it also sparked worries about public safety and potential environmental risks.

Gwent Police previously indicated that according to their records, the abandoned vehicle had been recorded and forwarded to the council for removal, suggesting their involvement in the matter had concluded and responsibility now rested with local authorities.

Officers clarified that once a vehicle has been examined and no immediate criminal or safety concerns are found, its removal becomes the responsibility of the relevant council.

Monmouthshire County Council stated that officers had conducted suitable enquiries following concerns about the vehicle and that plans had been made for its removal and disposal shortly.

However, villagers maintain that the car has stayed in position far longer than they consider acceptable, and that this delay damages trust in how abandoned vehicles and environmental hazards are addressed.

Residents now hope that by raising the issue publicly, the council will act swiftly to clear the vehicle and avoid similar hold-ups in future, contending that abandoned cars should not be allowed to spoil communities once they have already been recorded and transferred for recovery.
