More than 2 million fake text messages pretending to be from major UK banks have been stopped before reaching customers in a major crackdown on fraudsters.
VodafoneThree says it has blocked scam SMS messages targeting customers of Barclays, TSB and Co-op Bank during a 10-month pilot using new detection technology.
The mobile giant said its intelligent systems can distinguish between genuine bank messages and fraudulent texts, preventing them from reaching customers’ phones.

The technology has resulted in 25% more scam messages being blocked on the network during the trial.
Fake Barclays texts urged customers to act ‘immediately’
Among the fraudulent messages intercepted were fake texts claiming to be from Barclays.
One warned customers to call “immediately” about a pending payment of £509, while another falsely claimed an Apple Pay payment of £2,340.98 to Hamza Meats had been processed.
The scam texts were designed to panic recipients into calling fraudulent phone numbers or clicking phishing links that could expose personal or financial information.

The trial was developed with Barclays, alongside the Mobile Ecosystem Forum and the Cyber Defence Alliance, by creating bespoke rules within VodafoneThree’s existing SMS firewall.
The telecoms company said the project builds on its wider anti-fraud efforts, having blocked 139 million fraudulent text messages during 2025.
According to the company, UK banks lose around £1.17 billion every year because of fraud, with criminals increasingly impersonating trusted organisations through text messages.

What should customers do?
VodafoneThree is urging customers to report any suspicious text messages or phone calls by forwarding them free of charge to 7726, its dedicated spam reporting service.
The information is then shared with other mobile networks and anti-fraud organisations to help identify and block emerging scams before they can target more victims.
