Police have launched an investigation following reports of someone firing a BB or pellet gun.

The incident took place in a busy town centre, with Gwent Police receiving reports of a weapon being discharged in and around Caerphilly over a two-day period, raising concerns about public safety.

Officers increased their presence in the area, spoke to witnesses, and launched an investigation in response to the reports.

On Tuesday, a 19-year-old man from the Llanbradach area was arrested on suspicion of assault and possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

He remains in custody for questioning.

A vehicle believed to be linked to the incidents has also been seized by officers.

A spokesman for Gwent Police said: “We have had a number of reports of someone using a BB gun or a pellet gun around the Caerphilly area, largely around the town centre, over the last two days.

“Officers have spoken to a number of people and have been undertaking enquiries in the area.

“Today we have arrested a 19-year-old man, from the Llanbradach area, on suspicion of assault and possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

“He is currently being questioned.

“We have also seized a car as part of our ongoing investigation.”

Although the weapon is believed to be a BB or pellet gun rather than a conventional firearm, police say the situation is being treated seriously due to the fear and potential harm such weapons can cause, especially in public spaces.

BB and pellet guns, often sold as air weapons, can fall under firearms laws if capable of causing injury.

It is illegal to use them to threaten or intimidate others.

Officers are now working to identify any additional victims and are reviewing CCTV and dashcam footage to piece together the full circumstances of the incidents.

The investigation aims to determine whether anyone was injured or property was damaged.

Police are urging members of the public who witnessed suspicious activity, heard shots, or may have captured footage in or around Caerphilly town centre over the last two days to come forward.
