A 21-year-old woman from Newport who faced allegations of obstructing justice during a murder probe has been allowed conditional release.

Ella Persse had been held in custody since her appearance at the city’s magistrates’ court in May. She faces charges of attempting to pervert justice on May 7 in Newport by allegedly tampering with and disposing of material connected to a homicide inquiry.

The murder investigation concerns the deaths of two teenagers, 19-year-old Jaydon Bowyer and 16-year-old Tashay Canoville. The pair, described as close companions, lost their lives after a collision between a BMW car and a motorcycle in the Alway district of Newport. Emergency services declared them deceased on Aberthaw Road in the early morning of May 7. The pair are said to have been riding the motorcycle, with one as the rider and the other as the passenger.

Two men are charged with their deaths. Terell Case, 18, residing at Sandpiper Way in Duffryn, Newport, and Joshua Williams, 34, who has no fixed address in Newport, both face murder charges. The pair have been ordered to stand trial, with a provisional start date set for November 2 and an anticipated duration of three weeks or more. The court indicated that should proceedings be unable to commence on that autumn date, the case would likely be rescheduled to launch in January 2027. Both men remain in custody.

Persse received conditional bail from Recorder of Cardiff, Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke, during a session at the capital’s crown court. She is one of five individuals facing perverting the course of justice allegations in connection with the case. The other defendants are Yonis Zaid, 18, Montaser Yafai, 23, and a 16-year-old youth who cannot be identified. Zaid and Yafai continue to be held without bail, while the teenage boy was released on conditional bail. All four are scheduled to appear before the crown court on July 20.
