A 39-year-old woman has received a driving ban after refusing to give a breath sample when police requested one.

Amy Ryan, from Orchard Lane, Northville in Cwmbran, was asked to provide a breath test on May 2.

Police had reason to believe she had operated a motor vehicle and asked for a breath specimen, but she declined to do so without providing a valid reason.

Ryan attended Newport Magistrates’ Court on July 2 and admitted guilt to the charge of refusing to supply a specimen for testing.

She was handed a 16-month disqualification from driving, which could be shortened by 16 weeks should she finish a drink-driving rehabilitation programme before May 15, 2027.

Alongside the driving prohibition, she was ordered to pay a £135 fine, £200 in Crown Prosecution Service costs, and a £54 victim surcharge.

Payment will be taken from her benefits under a collection order.

The charge falls under section 7(6) of the Road Traffic Act 1988 and Schedule 2 of the Road Traffic Offenders Act 1988.

Ryan entered her guilty plea during the court hearing.
