Newport comic book fair turns shopping centre into hero haven

Published on

The Kingsway Centre became a gathering point for enthusiasts of all ages as the annual Newport Comic Book Fair returned, offering a full day dedicated to sequential art, gaming, and pop culture enthusiasts. The event, held Saturday and coordinated by Sin City Comics & Gaming, commemorated the shop’s most recent anniversary in Newport while aligning with the annual Free Comic Book Day celebration.

Independent vendor Kayla McMail, who travels from Caerleon to participate, stated that the majority of items available at her booth originate from her personal collection. She noted her attendance at as many fairs as possible, describing the events as valuable opportunities for comic and gaming enthusiasts to connect.

The shopping centre hosted numerous vendors offering vintage issues, graphic novels, Japanese manga, original artwork, action figures, trading cards, and collectibles. Sam Smith, who teaches photography and regularly operates a vendor booth, reported attending the majority of fairs, including events throughout Newport and other regions of the country, emphasizing his enjoyment in witnessing others share their enthusiasm for comics.

The programming appealed to various age groups, from children exploring new characters to teenagers clad in costumes depicting their favorite superheroes, alongside experienced collectors seeking uncommon editions. Attendees also acquired special Free Comic Book Day releases crafted to introduce newcomers to diverse comic series.

Regular attendee Katie Astbury-Davies acquired several titles for her personal collection and appreciated conversations with vendors about recent releases. Among the younger guests, siblings Megan and Caitlin Smith along with Ellie and Bethan Hutchinson left the event clutching their newly acquired comics and merchandise.

For shoppers who had not anticipated the fair, encountering costumed characters mingling with regular Saturday visitors provided an unexpected highlight. According to organizers and vendors, the gathering serves not only as a celebration for enthusiasts but also as a means to support local enterprises, increase foot traffic in the commercial district, and maintain vitality in Newport.

As attendees departed at the close of the event, many carried armfuls of comics and collectibles while discussing plans to return for the next gathering.
