A well-known broadcaster has been named the newest ambassador for a childhood cancer charity.
Owain Wyn Evans, who presents shows on BBC Radio 2 and also performs as a percussionist, has joined forces with Latch, a Cardiff-based organisation that supports children with cancer and their relatives across Wales.
The charity operates from the Children’s Hospital for Wales and offers social work services, financial assistance, and accommodation for family members staying nearby.
Mr Wyn Evans said he was delighted to take on the patron role for an organisation that means a great deal to him.
His husband Arran’s family accessed Latch’s services when he was growing up, and more recently a close friend and her family also received support from the charity.
The work carried out during difficult times is genuinely remarkable, he said. He expressed enthusiasm about working alongside the team and learning more about the important services Latch provides to help children and families throughout Wales.
Originally from Ammanford and now based in Penarth, Mr Wyn Evans has become famous for his energetic broadcasting style and his annual 24-hour drumming marathon for Children in Need.
He was announced as ambassador during an event at Cardiff and Vale College, where he met families and supporters of the cause and took part in a question-and-answer session with students.
Latch expects that Mr Wyn Evans’s celebrity status will help raise awareness as the charity seeks to expand its reach.
Susan Gwyer-Roberts DL, chair of Latch, said the board was thrilled to welcome Owain as Honorary Patron.
They looked forward to working with him to improve understanding of childhood cancer and the specialist services Latch offers across Wales.
Latch’s services ensure that families in Wales do not have to face a childhood cancer diagnosis without support.
