Police seize £28k of cocaine in drugs bust

A pair of cocaine suppliers have been sentenced after police discovered more than 200 grams of the class A drug with an estimated street value of approximately £28,000.

Sheldon Lewis, aged 28, and Kyle Williams, aged 39, both from Newport, received prison terms of six years and 27 months respectively at the city’s crown court.

The pair were engaged in distributing the class A drug during a period spanning from the end of October 2025 through to mid-December 2025.

Prosecuting counsel Jason Howells explained that their operation was disrupted when officers apprehended Lewis for driving while disqualified following his sighting on Corporation Road in Newport.

This development led investigators to his associate, who resided in accommodation on William Lovett Gardens.

There, officers uncovered the substantial quantity of cocaine along with £1,000 in cash contained within a vehicle.

Lewis occupied a pivotal position within their drug enterprise, issuing instructions to Williams regarding cocaine sales.

Both accused admitted responsibility for involvement in class A drug supply and possession with intent to supply.

Lewis, who was of no fixed address in Newport, also acknowledged charges of driving while disqualified and operating a vehicle without insurance.

Williams, residing at William Lovett Gardens in Newport, entered guilty pleas to possessing an offensive weapon, specifically a knuckleduster, in a private setting.

Mr Howells informed the court that Lewis had accumulated five previous convictions spanning the period from 2016 to 2023.

The defendant was described as an established drug trafficker with three prior convictions related to class A drug supply.

The court was informed that at age 19, the defendant had received a two-year detention order at a young offender institution for heroin supply.

In 2020, he received a four-year prison sentence after attempting to provide complimentary drugs to an undercover officer in exchange for identifying new purchasers.

During 2023, he was handed a six-year and three-month sentence after being discovered with heroin and cocaine valued at over £3,500 following a road traffic collision that occurred during a police pursuit.

Williams possessed an extensive record comprising 24 previous convictions covering 51 separate offences, though none involved drug trafficking.

Gareth Williams, representing Lewis, requested the court consider appropriate credit for his client’s guilty pleas.

His legal representative disclosed that his client had experienced a challenging upbringing and observed that he persistently makes poor choices.

Alice Sykes, counsel for Williams, who has two children, explained that the defendant had developed a serious drug dependency following the end of a romantic relationship.

Judge Daniel Williams indicated that both offenders would serve no more than half their custodial terms before being released under supervision.

The court mandated the seizure and destruction of the controlled substances.
