Newport secures £20m boost as local MP provides update

Published on

The UK Labour administration revealed last year that Newport would receive an extra £20 million through the Pride in Place initiative – a positive development for the area.

The funding will concentrate on reviving civic pride throughout the urban centre and nearby districts. Local residents and community groups will determine allocations via a Pride in Place Board. The recruitment process for board positions, including the chair role, will begin shortly, so monitoring social media channels would be advisable for those wishing to participate.

Following on from my previous Argus piece, I have held discussions with Lliswerry Independent councillors and St Patrick’s Primary School representatives regarding where the proposed Somerton railway station should be situated. Following extensive years of railway investment shortfalls from the Conservative administration in Westminster, it has been encouraging to witness this government direct substantial sums towards Welsh rail infrastructure. This encompasses financing for three new stations in Newport, including one planned for Somerton and another for Llanwern.

Ensuring these facilities meet community requirements is essential for maximising their benefit to the city, and I anticipate collaborating with councillors and local people to achieve this. Likewise, during early April, I engaged with the TRACS committee regarding their push for a Caerleon station. Their campaign is progressing well, and I am urging Westminster ministers to secure additional Welsh rail investment to advance this project.

Observing the city centre leisure facility development has generated considerable enthusiasm. The multimillion-pound regeneration scheme, financed jointly by Newport City Council, the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund, and the Welsh Government, seems to be advancing swiftly and making a striking impression. Completion is anticipated before the year concludes, and I eagerly await its opening for residents of all backgrounds to enjoy.

I welcomed the Steel Strategy announcement in Parliament, as did steelworkers throughout Newport East. By prioritising British-manufactured steel, the strategy outlines ambitious plans to expand the steel sector and safeguard employment – both critical for national security. Given the substantial workforce in Newport East’s steel industry, I anticipate backing the government in implementing all aspects of this strategy.

Street safety remains a priority concern for Newport East constituents, making the local rollout of the government’s neighbourhood policing restoration particularly welcome. Each ward in Newport East now benefits from a dedicated policing ward manager, with increased officer presence throughout Gwent. Reports indicate overall criminal activity has decreased across the city, which I trust residents will view favourably.

Numerous constituents have approached me regarding escalating living expenses stemming from the conflict in Iran. Increased fuel costs and subsequent impacts on other expenditure are clearly straining household finances. While April’s energy price cap reduction provides some assistance, alongside above-inflation increases to the State Pension and National Minimum and Living Wages, I recognise that many continue to experience hardship.

My constituency office offers support with various matters, including directing people towards help with cost-of-living pressures.

For issues concerning benefits, pensions, taxation, or living costs, please reach out. Upcoming constituency advice sessions are scheduled in Caerleon and Shaftesbury, with routine telephone consultations also available.
