Community rallies to help elderly disabled resident after devastating blaze

An online fundraising effort has been launched to support a disabled pensioner who lost his home after a blaze ripped through his property.

The fire broke out at a ground-floor property in the evening of April 29, just before 7pm.

The flames entirely destroyed the home of the 79-year-old occupant, who uses a wheelchair for mobility.

Claire Woodruff created the digital fundraising appeal. The description states that a devastating house fire on Wednesday 29th April 2026 left Lyn Gay, known as Lofty, a disabled man from Cwmbran with no home and destroyed all his possessions. The description continues that starting over proves difficult at any age but Lyn is 79, relies on a wheelchair and has lost absolutely everything, and any assistance would mean the world to him.

The initiative has gathered £225 against a target of £2,800.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service indicated the emergency was reported at around 6.47pm. A spokesperson stated that crews received notification at approximately 18:47 on 29 April concerning a fire at a bungalow on Glaslyn Court in Cwmbran. Firefighters from Porthcawl, New Inn and Abersychan stations attended and brought the blaze under control using equipment such as hose reel jets, a safety jet and breathing apparatus sets. Operations concluded at 20:21.

The flames spread to vegetation behind the property, with some fencing also suffering damage.

Investigators have yet to establish the complete level of devastation inside the structure, although the rear outside wall and part of the roof display fire damage. Several roof tiles were displaced.

By noon on Thursday, April 30, traces of smoke could still be detected in the area.

The fundraising drive has received strong support from the local community, and those wishing to donate can find the page at www.gofundme.com/f/cwmbran-fire-destroys-disabled-pensioners-home.
