Young passengers fuel demand for budget train tickets to visit family

Published on

British university learners are searching for affordable ways to return home during the summer break.

Figures indicate searches for budget rail tickets have climbed by 20 percent over the past month, despite train fares being held at current levels until 2027, as students aim to cut travel costs when term concludes.

With United Kingdom railway charges remaining among the steepest in Europe, those with already tight budgets are finding themselves under additional pressure.

Alvaro Ungurean, TrainPal’s commercial director for Europe, explained that reserving tickets well in advance greatly increases the chances of obtaining favourable prices.

He noted that the 12-week window before travel represents the ideal period when availability is ample and rates are at their lowest, yet passengers often forfeit these savings by delaying purchases until closer to their departure date when costs have already risen.

He also advises using split-ticketing methods to reduce spending.

For those arranging journeys between their university and family home, a 16-25 Railcard stays one of the most reliable ways to economise on regular trips.
