A senior figure in the renewable energy industry has been recognised for her contributions to the offshore wind sector.
Philippa Powell, who serves as the Celtic Sea development lead at RWE and project director for the Awel y Môr Wind Farm, was announced as the 2026 winner of the Ysbryd y Môr prize at the Marine Energy Wales Conference held in Llandudno.
The honour, translating to Spirit of the Sea, was introduced in 2024 to acknowledge individuals whose commitment and foresight are helping to define Wales’ marine energy industry.
Her professional background covers policy work, environmental stewardship, planning approvals, construction, and implementation, with significant input into Awel y Môr, which represents the inaugural Welsh offshore wind development to obtain a contract in more than ten years.
Tom Hill, programme manager at Marine Energy Wales, explained that what distinguished Philippa beyond her impressive professional accomplishments was the feedback from her colleagues. One colleague noted that their time working under her leadership represented the most fulfilling period in their entire career. The prize aims to highlight those who have devoted their careers, and in some instances their entire lives, to advancing Wales’ standing in this field, while also motivating and assisting their peers and team members. Similar to most sectors, advancement stems from genuine collaborative support rather than isolated efforts, and the organisation is pleased to celebrate Philippa’s achievements this year.
Situated roughly 10.5 kilometres from the Welsh shoreline, the Awel y Môr Wind Farm will supply electricity to over half of all households in Wales once fully operational.
