How long will Gwent’s early summer heatwave last?

Published on

Gwent is currently experiencing unseasonably warm conditions this week, with temperatures more typical of early summer than late April.

Across the county, daytime figures are reaching levels usually associated with June rather than this time of year.

Met Office weather specialists indicate that areas such as Newport and the valley bottoms are registering temperatures between 19 and 21°C.

These values surpass the usual averages for the season by around 5 to 8°C.

Records show April normally brings temperatures between 11 and 13°C in this region.

Higher ground in Blaenau Gwent, encompassing towns like Ebbw Vale and Tredegar, is also seeing temperatures in the mid to upper teens.

Night-time conditions remain pleasant too.

Readings are remaining above the mid-single figures, with some places staying in the low teens.

This substantially lowers the chance of any late-season frost appearing.

Those cultivating gardens may feel reassured about relocating vulnerable plants outdoors.

Figures for south-east Wales reveal that April’s mean temperature generally falls between 9 and 10°C.

Ordinary daytime maximums hardly ever exceed the low teens, while nights tend to turn chilly.

This week’s remarkable heat differs significantly from the norm and coincides with the approaching early May bank holiday alongside the start of summer programming.

The present warm period originates from a high-pressure zone situated in the vicinity.

This system is producing dry, settled conditions and permitting sunshine to push temperatures well above what is typical for the time of year.

Lighter winds combined with clear skies are allowing the air to warm quickly throughout the day.

Forecasters advise the public that rising ultraviolet levels mean protection from the sun remains important, even throughout April.

Guidance suggests using sunscreen, staying well hydrated, and looking after those most susceptible.

This heat comes after a Welsh winter marked by precipitation and unsettled conditions.

Subsequently, spring has grown drier as high-pressure systems have become more frequent.

Long-range predictions had suggested spring 2026 temperatures would mirror typical averages, interspersed with occasional warmer spells—and this week exemplifies such an interval.

Current conditions are presenting a short preview of summer weather before conditions are expected to become cooler and more unsettled the following week.

Local inhabitants are encouraged to make the most of the sunshine in recreational areas, along coastal walks, and at various outdoor locations while the warm period persists.

Meteorologists anticipate the meteorological situation will change during the upcoming week.

Rainfall and cooler conditions are forecast to return, bringing back the more typical unpredictable patterns.
