Monmouthshire has claimed the runner-up spot as the safest destination throughout the United Kingdom for children taking part in outside play activities.
This ranking comes from a study by outdoor play equipment company Outdoortoys, which analysed official figures to create a child safety score that assessed playground provision, road traffic safety, anti-social behaviour reports, and access to recreational facilities.
The Vale of Glamorgan took the top position, while Monmouthshire attained a rating of 8.21 out of 10, maintaining 167 parks and play spaces per 10,000 young people alongside almost 95 percent of urban roads operating under 20mph speed restrictions.
Further high-placed areas included Ceredigion in third spot and Powys in fourth.
Alex Price, a product specialist at Outdoortoys, identified unsafe roads and insufficient accessible play areas as factors keeping children indoors.
He explained that when parents cannot trust their offspring can safely play outside, children miss opportunities for unstructured play, fresh experiences, and self-reliance—chances every child deserves.
He added that participation in open-air activities extends beyond simple enjoyment and serves a vital function in physical fitness, social capability, personal confidence, creative imagination, and overall development.
Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire, Isle of Anglesey, Bridgend, and Flintshire also appeared within the leading ten, revealing a clear trend of Welsh administrative areas exceeding United Kingdom averages.
By contrast, Stoke-on-Trent held the bottom position, registering the lowest safety rating across the entire study.
Every Welsh local authority within the top ten exceeds the national United Kingdom average concerning roads with 20mph speed limits.
