A man from south Wales has been jailed after neglecting three husky dogs.
Ian John Hammond was sentenced to three months imprisonment and barred from keeping animals for five years at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court on April 20.
Proceedings were brought under the Animal Welfare Act for failures to meet the animals’ requirements at his home between February 18, 2025 and March 20, 2025.
All three dogs were discovered to be dangerously thin and living in squalid surroundings.
RSPCA animal rescue officer Kirsty Morgan reported that upon entering the premises, she was immediately overwhelmed by a strong smell of faeces and urine.
The dogs had access to all other rooms in the dwelling and every room was covered in excrement, waste and items of clothing.
Each of the dogs was found to be severely underweight.
The mature dogs suffered the most, with their ribs, hip bones and spines clearly distinguishable despite their thick coats.
A veterinary examination gave the adult dogs the poorest possible body condition score of one out of nine, while the puppy received two out of nine.
The animals were taken to Hope Rescue for care, and two of them have subsequently been placed in new homes.
RSPCA inspector Simon Evans said that every living creature deserves kind treatment, and those who accept the duty of caring for an animal must fulfil their requirements.
He added that thankfully these dogs were rescued and now have the chance to live in permanent, caring homes.
Hammond was also ordered to pay a £154 victim surcharge.
The court heard in his defence that Hammond had been battling a heroin dependency during the time of the offence but has since achieved sobriety through a methadone programme.
He received an additional month in prison for breaching the Bail Act, to be served consecutively with his primary sentence.
