Takeaway business must clean up act after failing health inspection

A food business has been ordered to make changes following a poor hygiene inspection from council officers.

Wok Masala, located on Victoria Street in Old Cwmbran, received a food hygiene rating of two out of five during an assessment carried out earlier this year.

Under the Food Standards Agency’s national rating scheme, a score of two means the business needs to make improvements and highlights several issues that must be resolved to reach acceptable levels.

The venue operates as a takeaway and sandwich shop serving Indian and Asian-style dishes, and is registered with Torfaen County Borough Council.

Torfaen Council carries out food safety checks on behalf of the FSA and shares the results online.

Hygiene inspections look at how food is handled, prepared, cooked and stored, as well as the cleanliness and layout of the premises and equipment.

Inspectors also review the procedures in place for food safety, staff training and record keeping.

Based on these factors, businesses receive an overall rating from zero to five, with five representing the highest category and zero indicating that urgent improvement is necessary.

Most food businesses, including restaurants, cafes, pubs and takeaways, must display their hygiene rating where customers can easily see it, such as on a window or door.

Food hygiene ratings are also available to customers through official websites and other platforms to help people make informed decisions about where to eat or order from.

The official food hygiene ratings database lists Wok Masala at 27 Victoria Street, NP44 3JN.

Following its most recent inspection, Wok Masala’s two-star rating will remain displayed until another assessment occurs.

The business can request another visit once it believes all identified problems have been addressed.

The Argus contacted both Wok Masala and Torfaen County Borough Council for more information about the specific concerns raised during the inspection and any steps being taken to improve hygiene standards.

Wok Masala did not respond to the request for comment.
