Police launch murder inquiry after fatal incident leaves man dead

A homicide inquiry has been initiated following the death of a male at a residence in Trevethin.

Officers from Gwent Police attended a home on Bythway Road in Trevethin at approximately 4.55pm on Thursday, April 23, after receiving reports that an individual had sustained severe injuries.

A 74-year-old local resident was declared deceased at the location.

A 37-year-old man from Cwmbran has been taken into custody on suspicion of killing and remains held by officers.

Detective Chief Inspector Neil Blyth, who is leading the investigation, stated that efforts are underway to clarify what occurred and that local residents should not be alarmed.

He noted that while such reports may generate worry, a local man with a prior connection to the deceased has been apprehended and no further individuals are being sought in relation to the case.

He emphasised that speculation regarding who was involved or what happened could hinder the inquiry, and urged anyone possessing relevant details to reach out through standard channels.

Emergency services personnel were present at the location alongside crews from the Welsh Ambulance Service and Wales Air Ambulance.

The victim’s next of kin have been notified and are receiving assistance from trained officers.

The force has indicated that a referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct will be made pursuant to standard practice.

A Gwent Police representative noted that contact had been made with the IOPC and the referral would be submitted as per standard procedures.

Investigators are requesting anyone with relevant information to make contact.

Those with details can reach Gwent Police by dialling 101, sending a private message on social media platforms, or completing the contact form on the force website, citing log reference 2600125343.

Alternatively, information may be provided anonymously through Crimestoppers by telephoning 0800 555 111.
