Farage reverses stance on reopening Welsh collieries

Published on

Nigel Farage has distanced himself from an earlier suggestion that he would restart coal mining operations in Wales. At a media event in September where the Reform UK leader first outlined his party’s proposals for Wales, he discussed the party’s ambition to reopen Port Talbot steelworks and resume coal mining activities in the country.

However, during media engagements on a visit to Merthyr Tydfil on Thursday, the Reform UK leader appeared to perform a policy reversal. Explaining his reasoning, Mr Farage stated that such proposals would cost a fortune and fall outside the jurisdiction of the devolved Welsh administration.

A similar inconsistency exists between Nigel Farage and Dan Thomas regarding their respective positions on 20mph speed restrictions. Mr Farage advocates prohibiting all such zones without exception, whereas Mr Thomas prefers retaining certain zones in locations such as near educational institutions, medical facilities and populated areas.

Observers characterise Farage as a populist figure willing to adopt any stance for electoral advantage, while Thomas presents himself as more pragmatic and unwilling to make misleading statements in the Senedd. Farage effectively controls Reform UK as the party’s mastermind, handpicking every candidate and deciding their ranking on regional lists. Despite being marketed as a people’s party, members have had no involvement in selecting those who represent them on the doorstep.

Reform UK depends more heavily on extremely wealthy supporters than any significant political organisation in contemporary British political history.

Research conducted by Democracy for Sale reveals that three individuals have supplied three-quarters of all contributions to Reform: Christopher Harborne, Jeremy Hosking and Richard Tice. Combined, these three donors have contributed £23 million of the £30 million received since Farage established the party under the Brexit Party banner in 2019.

On Thursday it was disclosed that Harborne, a businessman based in Thailand with substantial cryptocurrency holdings, gave £9 million to Reform in September – the greatest sum ever donated by a living individual to British politics.

The manner in which Reform allocates these funds may remain undisclosed. In Britain, political expenditure undergoes scrutiny and regulation exclusively during general election years.
