Newport Chronicle: Motorists are being warned of a weekend of disruption due to multiple overnight road closures.

Motorists are being warned of a weekend of disruption due to multiple overnight road closures. Key routes across Gwent and parts of south-east Wales will be affected, including sections of the A40, A4042, and the M4, with diversions in place and delays expected. Traffic Wales has announced that the A40 at Abergavenny will be closed in both directions from 7pm on April 23, until 6am on April 24, with a signed diversion route in place overnight. A second westbound closure will follow on the A40 from Raglan to the Abergavenny Hardwick roundabout, beginning at 8pm on Friday, April 24, and continuing until 6am on Saturday, April 25. Improvement works will also affect the A4042 at Penperlleni. The route will be closed in both directions from 8pm to 6am, with the final planned closure extending into the early hours of April 25. Despite this, National Highways has confirmed that there are currently no planned closures of either the M48 Severn Bridge or the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge for the weekend of April 24 to 26. Even so, drivers using the Prince of Wales Bridge are advised to remain cautious, as lighting remains switched off due to previous emergency works. A 40mph advisory speed limit remains in place during the hours of darkness. The M48 Severn Bridge continues to operate under a 7.5-tonne weight restriction for heavy goods vehicles. Elsewhere in Gwent, no major closures are currently reported on the A48, though drivers are advised to check for live updates before travelling. Traffic Wales has warned that congestion and delays on the M4 westbound between junction 24 at Coldra and junction 26 at Malpas, as well as eastbound between junction 28 at Tredegar Park and junction 26 are likely during the weekend rush hours. Drivers are being urged to allow extra time for journeys, particularly on Friday night into Saturday morning when several closures will be in effect. Officials recommend checking the latest traffic updates from Traffic Wales and National Highways before travelling. Live incidents, changing weather conditions, or last-minute updates to traffic management may impact planned closures, so motorists are advised to stay informed. Journey planners and traffic alerts will provide the most current information to help avoid delays during the weekend works.
