A 79-year-old from Newport has faced the city’s magistrates’ court on 19 historical sexual abuse charges.

Jeffrey Thomas, residing in Blackett Avenue, faces allegations covering the period from 1998 to 2011. The charges encompass indecent assault against a girl aged under 14, sexual assault by penetration of a girl under 13, indecent assault against a boy under 16, and causing or encouraging a boy under 13 to take part in sexual activity.

No pleas were offered and the matter has been referred to the crown court, with the next hearing scheduled for May 18. The accused was released on conditional bail.
