Three South Wales bank branches to shut their doors next month

The Spanish-owned lender plans to shut three of its South Wales locations this month.

The financial institution revealed 44 site shutdowns in January, to be carried out through 2026 and 2027.

The shutdowns follow shifts in how customers conduct their banking and threaten roughly 291 positions.

According to the bank, more than 96% of all customer activities are now performed online, while over-the-counter dealings have fallen by 66% since 2019.

An initial batch of 13 sites will cease operations on April 28 and 29, with an additional 27 to follow throughout May.

The locations scheduled for May include Bishop Auckland on May 5, Gosport on May 5, Haverfordwest on May 5, Huntingdon on May 5, Pontefract on May 5, Welwyn Garden City on May 5, Glengormley on May 6, Leyland on May 6, Mansfield on May 6, Merthyr Tydfil on May 6, Northallerton on May 6, Ringwood on May 6, Andover on May 12, Bridgend on May 12, Enniskillen on May 12, Macclesfield on May 12, Stratford-upon-Avon on May 12, Cwmbran on May 13, Golders Green on May 13, Heswall on May 13, Redditch on May 13, Stranraer on May 13, Stranraer on May 13, Newton Abbot on May 19, Stafford on May 19, Banbridge on May 19, Liskeard on May 20, and Shirley on May 20.

Four more locations are scheduled to close before the beginning of 2027.

A bank representative noted that the move comes as customers increasingly favour digital services, and the company is adapting its branch network accordingly. The organisation intends to keep investing in its physical locations, including full-service outlets, counter-free sites, branches with limited hours, and its popular Work Cafés, alongside improvements to its online and mobile offerings.

Lloyds Banking Group also revealed plans to shut 95 sites across Britain during 2026 and 2027, with seven affected in South Wales.

The affected Lloyds locations are Aberdare on June 23, Cardiff Victoria Park on June 3, Ebbw Vale on March 15 2027, and Swansea Enterprise Park on July 2.

Halifax branches facing closure are Bridgend on June 11, Cardiff Albany Road on June 11, and Cwmbran on June 2.
