Drivers warned of travel delays as roadworks hit Newport this weekend

Published on

A major highways upgrade scheme is set to begin this weekend, bringing road closures and traffic diversions for drivers.

The improvement programme will take place on a section of Malpas Road in Newport, with closures and travel disruption expected throughout the works period.

The resurfacing scheme will begin at 8pm on Friday, April 24, and is anticipated to be completed by 5am on Monday, April 27.

Should the works not meet the Monday morning deadline, the road will be reopened temporarily and operatives will return on Monday evening under a full closure to finish the scheme.

The affected section runs from the southernmost entry point to Goodrich Crescent, near the Crindau Constitutional Club, to around number 62 Malpas Road.

A Newport City Council representative said the scale of the scheme and necessary road closures would cause disruption, and the council thanked local residents and visitors for their patience and understanding during these road improvements.

Pedestrians will still be able to move around throughout the construction period.

Those living and working in properties directly adjacent to the work area have received information from the council detailing access and parking arrangements.

Vehicles can still access Goodrich Crescent and Walford Street by using the M4 junction 26 roundabout.

Those travelling to the Brynglas area can reach it from M4 junction 26 by using Ross Street or Pant Road.

As another alternative, drivers can enter the area through Redland Street from the Harlequin roundabout.

All other traffic must follow diversion routes via M4 junctions 25, 25a, 27, or 28 to reach the city centre.

The council is urging motorists to plan ahead and consider alternative routes to avoid congestion and delays.

Public bus services operating along Malpas Road will also be affected during the closure period.

Passengers should check with their service operator for the latest information on any route changes.

A Newport City Council spokesperson said anyone intending to travel through this area during these times should make arrangements in advance.

Further resurfacing works on Malpas Road are planned for future weekends, although dates have not yet been confirmed.

The council will publish further details once these dates are confirmed.

If this weekend’s works cannot be finished before 5am Monday, the council will inform the public on Monday morning through its social media channels should the additional work shift become necessary.

Motorists should also note that all planned times are provisional and may be altered due to bad weather or unforeseen circumstances.
