A culinary professional is set to showcase his nation’s talents internationally.
Sam Everton, aged 26, originally from Llangeler in Llandysul, will represent Wales in the Global Chefs Challenge final at the Worldchefs Congress and Expo. The event takes place at the ICC Wales in Newport from May 16 through 19.
He will work alongside his commis chef, Tyler Richardson, who hails from Y Seler in Aberaeron.
The duo will face competition from 15 of the planet’s top chefs during the final scheduled for Sunday, May 17.
In comments about the upcoming competition, Mr Everton expressed optimism about the home advantage. He noted that competing globally within Wales provides a unique opportunity, though it brings additional pressure. His goal is to achieve a top 10 placement, with winning a medal representing the pinnacle of his achievements, particularly given his status as a senior chef competitor.
As a catering lecturer at Coleg Ceredigion and part-time employee at Yr Hen Printworks in Cardigan, Mr Everton recently established a private dining enterprise. Remarkably, the first six months of bookings were filled within just two weeks of opening.
He secured his spot in the international final by claiming the National Chef of Wales championship at the Welsh International Culinary Championships the previous year.
Mr Everton becomes only the second culinary professional to capture both the Junior and National Chef of Wales titles in consecutive years.
Arwyn Watkins, leading the Culinary Association of Wales, is urging spectators to attend and support the Welsh competitors.
Mr Watkins emphasized that while other nations are bringing substantial fan bases to the four Global Chef Challenge finals, it would be regrettable if local support were absent for the Welsh team competing on home soil.
