Gavel Falls: Prison Sentences for Rape, Arson Threats and Indecent Acts

These offenders have received prison sentences recently for sexual assault, making threats to damage property, reckless driving, behaviour causing public outrage, and physical violence.

Below is a summary of their cases.

Jay Jenkins-Lang

Jay Jenkins-Lang obtained weapons before sexually assaulting a 17-year-old female.

The defendant, aged 23 and from Pontypool, fled while being accompanied by support workers heading to Newport Magistrates’ Court in June 2023, having already faced charges relating to firearms and bladed weapons.

He managed to escape from the support workers and departed by taxi.

He made his way to Cwmbran, pausing en route to purchase an air pistol and bullets.

Once there, he attacked and raped the teenage victim while still carrying the recently purchased weapons.

Officers apprehended him several hours later in the Cwmbran vicinity. He was wearing a stab vest and still in possession of the firearm, ammunition and a bladed weapon.

Jenkins-Lang did not admit to the crimes, and during his hearing in September 2024, he presented the court with a document claiming to be from the complainant, stating she was sorry for implicating him – however the document proved to be fraudulent.

He was convicted of rape, assault causing actual bodily harm, possessing an imitation firearm during the commission of an offence and an act intended to obstruct justice.

He acknowledged possession of a pointed article, possession of an imitation firearm and ammunition in a public place, possession of an offensive weapon in a public place, and criminal damage.

Jenkins-Lang received a 10-year custodial term with an additional six-year extended licence period.

He must sign the sex offenders register indefinitely and is subject to a lifelong restraining order.

Lewis Harvey

Lewis Harvey, aged 19 and residing on Newport Road in Cwmcarn, made threats to ignite his victim’s residence and place a brick on the victim’s head.

Newport Magistrates’ Court heard that the offences occurred on April 7.

Harvey admitted to dispatching communications containing threats to kill or cause serious harm and threats to destroy property.

These offences were carried out while he was subject to a suspended prison sentence.

He was consigned to a young offender institution for 28 weeks.

John Lamont

Dangerous driver John Lamont drove in reverse into an ambulance before exposing himself to a woman and child at a recreational area.

John Lamont, aged 28 from Newport, collided with an ambulance while operating a stolen Renault Arkana SUV on Cowbridge Road East in Cardiff on July 8 the previous year.

He subsequently drove onto the pavement and struck posts before the vehicle became lodged. He then declined to provide officers with a specimen for testing.

He did however confess to them that he had been using cocaine and drinking alcohol.

The defendant, who lives on Monnow Way in Bettws, entered guilty pleas to dangerous driving, failing to provide a specimen for analysis, operating a vehicle without insurance and driving otherwise than in accordance with his licence.

Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court heard that these offences occurred shortly after he had received a suspended prison sentence for shoplifting.

He also admitted to committing a public decency offence last month on March 14 when he displayed his genitals and buttocks at Cemetery Park in the Adamsdown district of Cardiff.

This behaviour was observed by a mother and her child.

The defendant received an aggregate sentence of 16 months imprisonment. He will be prohibited from driving for two years after his release and must pass an extended driving test to have his licence reinstated.

Michael George

Michael George, aged 30 and living on Church Road in Newport, has been imprisoned for carrying out two attacks without provocation in Cardiff.

George entered guilty pleas to two counts of assault by beating against a male and female on May 5.

He was sentenced to 24 weeks custody at Newport Magistrates’ Court and directed to pay £200 in compensation to his victims.

Luke Williams

Reckless driver Luke Williams has been sentenced after being detected driving despite being prohibited from the roads.

Williams, of Halstead Street in Newport, entered a guilty plea to operating a Ford Transit van on Phillip Street within the city on February 10 while disqualified and without holding a licence.

The defendant, aged 35, received a 16-week prison sentence.

He will additionally be barred from driving for 12 months following his release from custody.
