EastEnders receives commendation from Samaritans regarding upcoming storyline
Recently, the charity Samaritans praised a forthcoming EastEnders plot intended to address the stigma surrounding mental health difficulties.
On the popular BBC soap, character Ravi Gulati, played by Aaron Thiara, is currently experiencing suicidal thoughts.
The storyline is poised to reach its climax later this month when he faces a critical moment.
Lorna Fraser, who manages the Media Advisory Service at Samaritans, expressed optimism that the episodes would help viewers confronting similar difficulties to seek assistance.
According to Fraser, storylines responsibly reflecting experiences of mental health and suicide can help tackle stigma and encourage viewers who might be struggling to talk about how they are feeling.
The organisation noted it was proud to have worked alongside EastEnders in depicting Ravi’s self-harm and mental health crisis with sensitivity and valued their commitment to handling the matter as safely as possible.
Executive producer Ben Wadey commented that EastEnders always takes great care when researching storylines such as Ravi’s and they’re grateful to Samaritans for the advice they have given them, helping them ensure Ravi’s story is told with the care and sensitivity it deserves.
