City centre curry house from 1983 makes long-awaited return with son

A beloved Newport Indian restaurant is set to make its comeback after years away.

Indian Cottage, which initially launched in 1983, will resume operations on Monday as a collection-only service managed by Glam Ramzan, the son of the original proprietor Oscar.

That chapter concluded in 2018 when Mr Ramzan chose to lease the establishment to others, withdrawing from direct involvement.

Eight years on, he is reintroducing the name, vowing to reinstate the excellence his father established more than four decades ago.

Mr Ramzan stated that from the outset, the priority has been premium produce, even if it requires waiting for suitable supplies to become available.

No compromises.

The aim is to revive things correctly.

The newly launched Indian Cottage will function as a pre-order only takeaway, enabling the team to concentrate on fresh preparation and dependable standards rather than pursuing rapid walk-in trade.

Mr Ramzan noted that as the correct team is assembled and appropriate staff are recruited, the operation will grow.

The complete menu will arrive, traditional methods will return, but this must happen properly with proper stocks and genuine tastes.

During the opening week, a restricted selection will be available, prepared with care and without rushing, Mr Ramzan confirmed.

The revival signals the comeback of a name that once served as a fixture of Newport life, recognised for its distinctive shopfront, fragrant spices and dependable dishes.

For Glam, it represents an opportunity to pay tribute to his father’s memory by restoring Indian Cottage methodically, one thoughtfully prepared order after another.

He anticipates that this measured, quality-driven approach will remind patrons of what made the original Indian Cottage so cherished, and demonstrate that classic principles retain their value in a changing takeaway sector.

Indian Cottage opens its doors on Monday and will operate as a pre-order only takeaway, with expansion planned as the team develops.

The business is currently in a gradual launch phase, and updates are available via their Facebook page.

Customers anticipating the return of this Newport favourite will be able to experience the same flavours and service that built Indian Cottage’s reputation, delivered with renewed attention to quality and care.
