A celebration of imagination, togetherness and recovery is set to transform a Welsh town this weekend.
Monmouth will host the Wye Valley River Festival’s Monmouth Mischief programme on Saturday, May 2.
The event forms part of the yearly festival and intends to support locals still processing the impact of severe flooding that hit the area last autumn.
Phillippa Haynes, creative director of Wye Valley River Festival CIC, explained that Monmouth had shown impressive resilience after the devastating floods, and the goal was to bring something truly uplifting back to the town for the May Bank Holiday weekend.
Drybridge Park will feature enormous puppets, humorous entertainment, storytelling productions and hands-on workshops, all provided without charge for families.
The team looks forward to seeing the community come together and enjoy everything this remarkable scenery and setting have to offer.
Taking place at Drybridge Park, the family-friendly programme will include free performances with giant puppets, participatory dance theatre, comedy, art exhibitions and craft activities.
The Merry Monmouth community procession will kick off the celebrations, setting off from near Shire Hall and traveling along Monmouth High Street at 11:30 a.m.
Highlights comprise Daniel, a puppet measuring eight feet in height depicted as an ancient guardian of the land, alongside acts from the Kitsch & Sync Collective.
The Ragged Storytelling Collective will also perform, along with Cornish creator Seamas Carey, plus a showcase dedicated to the old Celtic tradition of informing the bees.
Workshops and artistic pursuits will continue throughout the day, with organisers encouraging visitors to don green clothing to promote environmental awareness.
Residents can also join pre-festival activities by attending free creative sessions at the Old Market Hall in Monmouth on April 25 and April 30.
