Marathon route closures to affect Newport roads tomorrow

Published on

Key routes will be blocked throughout Newport this Sunday as the ABP Newport Wales Marathon takes place, with thousands expected to take part in the sporting occasion.

The popular annual running event is set to affect numerous roads across the city, prompting officials to urge local residents to plan ahead and check their travel arrangements carefully.

Major arterial roads along the marathon route—including Usk Way, the dockside region, and routes crossing the Gwent Levels—will be sealed off from early morning to allow the competition to proceed safely.

Run 4 Wales, the organisation responsible for staging the event, has indicated that all closure schedules are provisional and dependent on the race beginning at 9am.

Should the event be delayed, the timing of road restrictions and their removal could shift, though thoroughfares are anticipated to become available again once the final competitor has passed and within the stated windows.

The following traffic restrictions will be in effect:

Usk Way will be sealed from 3am through to 7pm.

The competitors’ hub situated alongside Kingsway will be closed from 8.30am with a projected reopening at approximately 10.30am.

The A48 westbound lane will be shut between 7.30am and 11.15am.

Access to the Newport Transporter Bridge Visitor Centre will be barred from 7.30am to 3.30pm, with the leading competitor anticipated to arrive at 9.04am.

Stephenson Street will be blocked between 8.40am and 3pm, with the first runner expected at 9.55am.

Traston Road will be inaccessible from 7.30am to 2.45pm, first runner due at 9.57am.

Nash Road will be shut from 8.30am to 2.30pm, with the initial runner anticipated at 9.19am.

Nash Estate and the RSPB Wetlands will be closed between 9am and 12.30pm.

The section from Nash Road through to Straites Lane and Broad Street Common will be restricted from 9am to 2.20pm, with the first runner expected at 9.21am.

Goldcliff Road will be inaccessible from 9am to 2pm, first runner anticipated at 9.29am.

Whitson Common Road will be sealed between 9am and 2pm, with the first runner due at 9.35am.

The route from Parish Reen via Bowleaze Reen to North Row will be closed from 9am to 1.10pm, with the first runner expected at 9.35am.

North Row Estate will be inaccessible from 9am to 11.45am, first runner anticipated at 9.50am.

Additional controls will be enforced on surrounding roads, with diversionary paths and traffic management in operation throughout the day.

Certain areas will maintain supervised access or restricted entry during the competition.

East Docks Estate will allow regulated entry and exit for local residents and businesses from 7.30am to 3.30pm, whilst Lysaght Estate will have managed resident departure available between 12.30pm and 3pm.

The A48 eastbound will function as a one-way access route from 7.30am to 11.15am.

Traston Road Estate will permit controlled entry and exit from 8.40am to 10.15am, followed by a further window from 10.15am to 2.45pm.

Limited access will additionally be available at Nash Estate and the RSPB Wetlands via Meadow Road between 12.30pm and 2.20pm.

Event officials are encouraging drivers to avoid affected areas, allow extra time for any essential journeys, and follow all posted diversions and traffic officer instructions.

Both the marathon and half marathon get underway at 9am on Usk Way, followed by the 10K at 9.45am.

Junior events—including the Future Challengers race, Toddler Dash, and Family Fun Run—begin from midday.

All events start and conclude on Usk Way, close to the University of South Wales campus, where a dedicated event hub will be operational.
