UK Fashion Brand Shuts 137 Branches Following Administration

A major British fashion retailer has shut down all its outlets after falling into administration, effectively disappearing from the high street.

The Original Factory Shop (TOFS) ran 137 branches before entering administration earlier this year.

In recent weeks, the company began winding down locations across the country, with sales events launched at every site.

The remaining TOFS stores have now officially closed, with the retailer’s head office also stopping operations.

The Factory Shop Limited, trading as The Original Factory Shop, was established in 1969.

The discount retailer sold goods ranging from clothing to homeware.

TOFS closed 32 sites in 2018 amid falling profits and the loss of its credit insurance protection, though after the pandemic, during the 2021/22 financial year, the company’s earnings saw substantial growth.

In 2025, Modella Capital purchased the chain from Duke Street Capital, and several sites shut when TOFS entered a company voluntary arrangement in April 2025.

The business entered administration in January of this year.

The online store stopped trading straight away, while the remaining 137 stores began closing over the following weeks.

At the time of closure, TOFS employed 1,180 people across its 137 stores and corporate offices.

Interpath, which was appointed during the administration process, has confirmed that the final TOFS locations have, as of this month, now closed.

A spokesperson told The Grocer that a phased closure of the store portfolio was implemented considering the financial position.

The spokesperson stated that without any viable offers to take the business forward, it was not possible for The Original Factory Shop to continue trading and all remaining stores were closed on April 4, 2026.

They said that the majority of employees have been made redundant, though a small number of staff have been retained to help the joint administrators formally wind down the business.

The spokesperson added that a specialist team is in place to support impacted staff with making Redundancy Payments Service claims.

TOFS is not the only company facing financial difficulties this year, with 2026 already seeing numerous retailers and businesses entering administration and others announcing extensive store closures.

Russell & Bromley, Moores, Claire’s, Quiz, Denby, and National Car Parks (NCP) are among the major businesses that have recently fallen into administration.

Lifestyle brand Gandys, which has been worn by Prince William and Sir Richard Branson, has been forced into administration due to a sudden withdrawal of funding.

Following its administration, the business has reduced prices by up to 75 percent both online and in physical stores.

LK Bennett, founded in the 1990s, entered administration in January and has now shut down its website.

Online sales through the LK Bennett website continued since the administration announcement earlier this year until recently.

The website has now closed with a message stating that website and phone order are now closed and to shop in store for a limited time.

Other significant high street retailers, including River Island, Primark, and Poundland, have been compelled to close stores, while Revolution and BrewDog have closed 21 and 38 pubs, respectively.

However, there is some positive news, with UK beauty firm Beauty Bay filing for administration in March 2026 before being rescued.

A French-owned company called AA Investments Group acquired it for an undisclosed sum, preserving stores and jobs.
