Campaigners across South Wales are urging Westminster to bolster the Hunting Act 2004 by addressing legislative loopholes that they argue allow illegal activity to continue under the guise of trail hunting, following Labour’s commitment to tighten the law.
Naturalist and broadcaster Chris Packham responded to footage capturing the Coniston Foxhounds flushing out a fox by saying he felt physically sick and questioning who carries out such acts and why the government permits them to avoid consequences.
The Curre and Llangibby Hunt, which operates within South Wales, continues to function, with supporters maintaining that evidence repeatedly demonstrates hunts breaching regulations.
A spokesperson for the Hunt Saboteurs Association said hunts have ignored the legislation for twenty years and the government is finally acting because the proof is overwhelming and can no longer be overlooked.
Rowan Hughes, another spokesperson for the organisation, stated that reaching this point has taken far too long. For two decades the law has been inadequate, but the country is now close to securing a genuine ban on hunting.
They maintain that trail hunting frequently operates as a cover for continued illegal hunting activity.
