Weekly Court Round-Up: Local Cases Heard

Magistrates court cases from the local area have resulted in several driving prohibitions and financial penalties.

An 18-year-old man from Ffos Y Fran, Bassaleg, Newport has been banned from driving for a year after pleading guilty to operating a vehicle with a cannabis derivative in his system on Forge Road during the previous New Year’s Eve celebration. Rhys Williams was directed to pay £638, which includes a financial penalty, court costs and a victim surcharge.

Andrew Watkins, 45, residing in Tenison Road, Trevethin, Pontypool received a three-year driving prohibition after admitting to drink-driving. Police recorded 54 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath during an incident on the A4042 on March 20. The court issued a £120 fine along with £85 in costs.

A 24-year-old from The Hawthornes, Raglan, Monmouthshire has been disqualified from driving for 20 months. Aaron Hickmans admitted to drug driving with a cannabis derivative present in his system on the B4598 on December 4 the previous year. He faces financial penalties totalling £1,054.

Anthony Pleece, 57, of Valley Road, Ebbw Vale was handed a 12-month driving disqualification following a guilty plea to drug driving with a cannabis derivative detected in his blood, occurring on the A465 at Llanfoist near Abergavenny on December 27 last year. He must pay £585 in fines, costs and a surcharge.

Sean Martin McNamee, 39, of Balfe Road, Newport was ordered to pay £408 for keeping a motor vehicle that did not have valid insurance.

Keiron Jones, 28, from St Matthews Road, Cwmfields, Pontypool was ordered to pay £197 after pleading guilty to being in charge of a vehicle while impaired by drugs on St Andrews Crescent, Abergavenny on November 1 the previous year. His driving licence received 10 penalty points.

Richard O’Sullivan, 45, from Commercial Street, Aberbargoed, Caerphilly was prohibited from driving for 14 months after admitting to driving while unfit due to drugs on Floral Avenue, Blackwood on January 19. He was directed to pay £253.

Matthew Batt, 42, of Heol Cae Derwen, Bargoed, Caerphilly must pay £197 after admitting to behaviour constituting being drunk and disorderly on March 24.
