At the Rogerstone Community Council meeting, members gave the green light for spending up to £1,000 on the allotment committee’s activities, with the money coming from the 2026/27 rental income fund.
Councillor C. Larcombe chaired the proceedings held on March 4 at Tydu Community Hall. Attending were S. Bowen, S. Jones, R. Lloyd, B. Davies, Y. Forsey, J. Gibbons, K. Gray, P. Smith, S. Meek, D. Mlewa, and G. Foley. A. Hobbs and J. Reynolds sent their apologies for being unable to attend.
The council examined the record from the February 4 meeting and examined the results of the allotment working group that met on February 25. The main topics involved organising the planned trip to St Julians allotments and extending a invite to a representative from Newport City Council to discuss self-management options. The group looked into possible ways to financially support the allotment committee using both rental income and Section 137 grants.
Progress was reported on the self-management proposal following the well-attended February 25 meeting, with the group’s first official gathering set for March 18.
The February Repair Cafe event, which took place between 10am and noon on Saturday the 21st, was praised, and residents were told the next session would be held on March 28 from 10am to 1pm.
Other items on the agenda covered the West Ward casual vacancy, playground lottery grant updates, and route adjustments needed because of erosion along the River Ebbw.
Regarding the West Ward vacancy, no nominations had come in by the March 15, 2026 cutoff date.
On the riverside path issue, the council sanctioned shifting the Public Right of Way landward, contingent on approval of a full route design, entry and exit arrangements, risk assessments, and supporting paperwork. Members also called for urgent work to begin on the Jubilee Park revetment to safeguard the flood defence structure and asked Newport City Council to consider reopening the path once those works are finished.
Work on improving the electrical supply to the Glade Cafe gazebo continued.
Approval was given for purchasing a replacement turf mower for the local cricket club, with acknowledgement that the existing equipment needed replacing and that the council would take ownership of the new device.
The late arrival of the 2023/24 audit results, received a full twelve months behind schedule, prompted considerable discussion. Although an official complaint was filed with the Wales Audit Office, the matter remains unresolved. After reviewing the audit findings, several objections were recorded and sent to the Wales Audit Office.
Section 137 payments received official sanction, with £500 allocated to RAFC, £1,000 to Rogerstone Band, and £250 to HCPT.
Upcoming events include sunflower trail planting mornings on Saturday April 4 and Saturday April 11, both from 10am to noon, a festival scheduled for June 21 at the welfare grounds, and the Great Get Together on the same date.
