New BBC Series Seeks Young People Searching to Find Where They Belong

Published on

A fresh BBC documentary series is turning the spotlight onto young friendships.

The six-episode programme, called Will You Be My Friend?, accompanies kids between five and eight years old who struggle to form friendships.

Created by Five Mile Films, the series focuses on those who are timid, feel they do not belong, or simply have not yet discovered their group.

Nick Mirsky, the chief executive of Five Mile Films, expressed that no other project could have excited him more to bring to the company. He noted that the programme would be delightful, heartwarming and humorous, yet it would also accomplish something truly innovative by inviting viewers to examine closely both the difficulty and skill involved in establishing friendships.

The programme presents a Friendship Centre, where young people receive guidance from psychologists to develop the social abilities and self-assurance necessary for connecting with peers.

Each child is matched for a play session with a possible companion from their neighbourhood, with the aim of fostering a genuine bond.

Six weeks afterwards, the series revisits the children to observe how their recently discovered bravery has made a difference at school, in the playground and elsewhere.

Emma Loach, who serves as acting head of commissioning for documentaries, remarked that the desire to form connections, to be noticed and to feel part of something applies to everyone. She stated that regardless of whether someone is five or fifty-five, it would be impossible to watch these young people without recognising something familiar in their experience. She observed that in an era when many feel increasingly isolated, this programme demonstrates that even basic actions such as a grin, a joint laugh, or a hesitant invitation to become friends still hold the capacity to transform everything. She added that Five Mile Films had delivered something truly remarkable, and the BBC takes great pride in providing it with a home.

The programme serves as an important reminder that a single companion has the potential to transform someone’s existence entirely.

Will You Be My Friend? will broadcast on BBC One and iPlayer.

Parents wishing to assist their child in finding a new companion are invited to submit an application through the internet.
