Dentist Pitches Cricket Business Idea in South Africa

Published on

A Monmouth-based dental professional has recently merged his professional work with his passion for cricket.

Gareth Jones, proprietor of Monmouth Dental Practice located in St James’ Square, recently traveled to South Africa to lead a specialized workshop as part of SICON, an international conference arranged by dental implant manufacturer Southern Implants.

Together with colleague Dr Aly Virani, the pair delivered what was described as a “fascinating” presentation to international delegates regarding a novel protocol they created.

Their dental implant protocol enables a specific type of implant to be positioned simultaneously with molar extraction.

This innovative technique is scheduled to appear in a prominent scientific publication later this month.

During the conference, Mr Jones was asked to serve as judge for a competition featuring presentations from 10 other dental professionals.

Mr Jones actively participates in Monmouth Cricket Club, playing in the first team alongside his eldest son Osian while also coaching the women’s squads.

While in South Africa, he utilized the opportunity to get some playing practice in before the new season commenced.

Following the academic portion of SICON, Mr Jones participated in a social cricket match at Somerset West club in the vicinity of Cape Town.

Representing his Monmouth club in team attire, he secured one wicket across three overs, saw five catches dropped from his bowling, and then scored a rapid 20 runs not out.

The warm-up match concluded appropriately with a traditional South African braai afterward.

Now, Mr Jones is eager to resume duties at his St James’ Square practice, preparing for his vice-captain position with recently-promoted Monmouth as they compete in the South-East Wales Cricket League Division 6, and continuing his coaching responsibilities with the club’s women’s hardball and softball teams.
