A formal investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the death of an individual who became ill at a venue in Pontypool.
Leonard John Vincent Powell, aged 67 and residing at Belgrave Court in Pontypool, passed away on August 17 2025 at the Comrades of War establishment in Pontypool after suffering a collapse.
Gwent’s Senior Area Coroner, Caroline Saunders, convened the preliminary hearing into Mr Powell’s death on Monday, March 30.
Paramedics and other emergency personnel responded to calls regarding a man who had collapsed, though they were unable to save Mr Powell.
Medical examination established that Mr Powell’s cause of death was ischaemic heart disease combined with elevated levels of prescription medication in his body.
The coroner determined that the toxic concentration of prescribed drugs present in Mr Powell’s bloodstream contributed substantially to his passing, leading to a classification of his death as unnatural and necessitating a full inquest.
Proceedings have been postponed to allow for further investigation, including examination of the reasons behind Mr Powell’s consumption of prescription medication at heightened levels at the time of his death and what assistance he may have been receiving.
The inquest is scheduled to resume on November 30 at 11am.
