Local priest assists national pet charity through rabbit foster care

A clergyperson from the area is providing temporary care for rabbits through a national animal welfare organisation.

Reverend Liz Houghton, who lives in Newport, has been assisting Blue Cross for nearly two years by looking after rabbits at her residence until suitable new homes can be found.

The peaceful surroundings and kind attention she provides enable the rabbits to recuperate, interact with others, and get ready for their eventual owners.

She is presently caring for her 11th and 12th rabbit fosterlings, named Bun-yonce and Hopra-Winfrey, alongside eight guinea pigs.

Georgie Riley, who manages the Blue Cross Rehoming, Behaviour and Advice Unit in Newport, explained that rabbits are frequently considered low-maintenance companions, but they demand considerable time, living space, and appropriate husbandry, with veterinary expenses quickly adding up.

The organisation, which runs a rehoming facility at Langstone Newport Business Village, has experienced a significant surge in requirements.

During the previous year, the volume of rabbits welcomed into their programme grew by 25 percent, while demands for rehoming increased by 40 percent.

Volunteer fosterers such as Reverend Houghton enable the staff to support additional animals locally who require assistance.

Riley mentioned that this Easter they are encouraging individuals to contemplate registering as foster carers for Blue Cross.

Those who volunteer to foster receive comprehensive instruction, and the organisation handles all expenses related to the animal’s upkeep, including transportation, food, and veterinary treatment.

Members of the public can offer assistance with diminutive creatures such as rabbits, guinea pigs, and hamsters, though they may also provide foster care for felines and canines.

Those wishing to become involved in fostering for Blue Cross can obtain additional details via their online platform.

The organisation can also be reached by dialling 0300 777 1850 or through electronic mail at newport@bluecross.org.uk.
