Wildfire experts are urging people to take precautions following a dramatic rise in grassland blazes.
Official figures reveal that Welsh fire crews responded to 3,474 grass fire callouts throughout 2025, representing a 275 percent jump compared with the year before.
The Wales Wildfire Board has warned that just one ember—whether sparked unintentionally or set deliberately—can escalate into a rapidly spreading fire capable of endangering residential properties, wildlife habitats and vast areas of countryside.
Andrew Wright, who chairs the Wales Wildfire Board and serves as Senior Specialist Advisor for Plant Health and Knowledge Transfer at Natural Resources Wales, stated that their Wildfire Wise initiative draws upon more than ten years of combating wildfires throughout Wales, yet the magnitude of incidents recorded last year exceeded anything previously experienced.
He emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts to develop a healthier, more robust and species-rich environment going forward.
Wright noted that while mishaps do occur, numerous incidents could be averted, and the campaign outlines straightforward measures everyone can adopt to stop grass fires before they ignite.
Members of the public are also being encouraged to notify authorities of any concerning behaviour by contacting CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111 or dialling 101, with 999 reserved for emergency situations.
The Wales Wildfire Board focuses on raising public awareness about wildfire prevention and outdoor safety precautions, particularly during summer when vegetation dries out quickly and becomes increasingly susceptible to ignition.
