Motorists are facing substantially higher costs at the pumps following record-breaking monthly fuel price rises.
Data from RAC Fuel Watch shows petrol averaged a 20p per litre jump throughout March, while diesel climbed by 40p per litre.
The changes mean an additional £11 for a complete tank of petrol and £22 for diesel.
RAC policy chief Simon Williams stated that March had been exceptional, with fuel costs accelerating faster than at any other point in a single month.
He noted that the surges experienced throughout March 2026 far surpassed those observed when conflict first erupted in Ukraine.
A litre of unleaded fuel increased from 132.83p at the start of March to 152.83p by month’s end.
Diesel saw an even steeper trajectory, rising from 142.38p to 182.77p.
This makes it the greatest monthly increase ever documented, almost doubling the previous record of 22p.
Williams warned that both families and companies would feel the effects.
He added that research demonstrates eight-in-10 individuals rely on their cars, so these expenses are likely placing significant pressure on households and businesses alike.
