Over 100 hens are searching for new families this week.
The British Hen Welfare Trust is organising an emergency rehoming drive in Shirenewton, Monmouthshire, on Sunday 5 April and is appealing to the public to provide 105 former commercial laying birds with a new lease of life.
The organisation is asking animal enthusiasts to step forward by 4pm on Thursday 2 April to secure hens for adoption.
Andy Hill, representing the Trust, explained that people frequently discover unexpected happiness from keeping hens. He noted they possess amusing personalities and inquisitive natures, thrive on predictable daily patterns, and are genuinely rewarding companions to look after. He added that the birds continue producing eggs without issue. With warmer weather arriving, now marks the perfect moment to begin. These birds are completely prepared for a fresh start and prove to be excellent companions.
The birds are approximately 18 months of age and have existed their entire existence within commercial egg production systems.
The Trust maintains they retain significant value as affectionate, useful household animals.
Those wishing to offer these hens an alternative future should simply guarantee them safety, regular feeding and watering, and some gentle care.
To take on a hen, prospective owners can use the Trust’s online platform or telephone the rehoming division on 01884 860084.
