Nestle speaks out on KitKat shortage after 12 tonnes of chocolate theft

A shipment of over 400,000 KitKat items was taken from a freight vehicle, though Nestlé has confirmed this will not impact production or availability.

The confectionery company reported that the 12 tonnes of chocolate went missing while travelling from one of their Italian facilities to a location in Poland.

In an official communication, the brand stated that the products were taken during the journey between their Central Italian manufacturing site and the intended destination in Poland.

They advised they were coordinating with law enforcement agencies and logistics providers as part of their investigation.

The statement indicated that consumer safety remains unaffected and that their supply operations continue as normal.

The whereabouts of the stolen chocolate bars and the vehicle involved have not been established.

A company representative commented that while the brand has long promoted the idea of taking a break with KitKat, it appeared those responsible had interpreted the slogan rather too literally by making off with more than 12 tonnes of their chocolate.

The representative noted that although the perpetrators clearly demonstrated excellent taste in their selection, cargo theft represented a growing problem affecting organisations across all sectors.

With increasingly advanced criminal operations becoming more frequent, the company decided to disclose their own experience publicly in order to highlight what has become a widespread criminal phenomenon.

The absent chocolate could potentially surface through informal markets throughout Europe, though Nestlé has indicated that each product carries distinctive batch identifiers enabling tracking.

A company spokesperson explained that should a match be identified, the scanner would receive specific guidance on notifying KitKat, after which the relevant evidence would be shared accordingly.
