A vehicle industry specialist has alerted motorists about an age-old rumour that could leave them facing fines, penalty points and potentially a disqualification from driving.
Graham Conway, representing prominent car leasing company Select Car Leasing, pointed out that a significant number of drivers continue to hold the mistaken belief that smart motorway cameras do not constantly record.
UK speed restrictions clarified
This belief is unfounded – overhead gantry cameras remain active and can detect those exceeding 70mph even when no adjustable limit is displayed.
He stated that this misconception surfaces frequently, yet it represents an error that could seriously compromise your day.
It seems many motorists assume the speed detection equipment on smart motorways only functions when the electronic signs on overhead structures indicate a changeable restriction, such as 50mph or 60mph.
These drivers understand they must reduce their speed upon seeing such signals, but incorrectly assume that at other times they cannot be penalised for exceeding the speed limit, provided they do not encounter officers.
This assumption is completely wrong. Discussion boards contain numerous accounts from motorists who have fallen victim to precisely this misunderstanding.
